NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Many Tennessee cities have their own special nicknames—Nashville, of course, is known as 'Music City' or 'the Athens of the South'—just like the state itself is known as 'The Volunteer State.' Some city nicknames come from the community's rich traditions, or they could be given based on the community's location geographically. Nicknames can also come from intentional branding efforts. Music City came about as a combination of both historical information and a branding effort by the Nashville Convention and Visitors' Bureau in the early 2000s.
